A concerted drive against assimilation, with highest priority given to specific steps to counter the erosive effects of Jewish illiteracy and the lack of Jewish foundation in many so-called Jewish defense activities, was decided upon by the national advisory board of the Farband-Labor Zionist Order at its annual conference at Unser Camp here today.
The more than 100 key Farband leaders, including the national executive and representatives of city committees in communities throughout the United States and Canada decided to intensify the drive against “Jewish ignorance” through the following program:
1) Incentive scholarships to Jewish students who follow teacher training courses which will prepare them to become teachers in Jewish schools; 2) An intensive drive to set up at least four or five new day schools within the next five years; 3) To devote special efforts to organize adult Jewish education study groups by Farband branches in communities throughout the United States and Canada; 4) To extend the Farband-Israel scholarship program to enable young people to go to Israel whether as students at the Hebrew University or other schools of higher Jewish learning in Israel, or to join as members of work-study groups on kibbutzim, or to become members of some service groups of American youths in Israel.
