While the tense mood of the Syrian public during the past few days has been reminiscent of that prevailing before the Suez campaign of 1956, and the people in the streets talk much about war, many want to believe that the “dynamics of peace will finally win in the end.” This description appeared here today in a dispatch from the Beirut correspondent of Le Monde, the authoritative Parisian daily.
According to the account, Damascus lamented the “loneliness of Syria on the international scene” and the Government’s “incompetence in involving the population in the struggle it intends to lead against Zionism and imperialism.” In addition, many people were described as wondering whether there might not be an element in the internal Syrian opposition which wished for an Israeli intervention that could determine the Government’s fall.
