George Rockwell’s American Nazi Party was today refused a permit to hold an anti-Negro, anti-Semitic “white power” rally at the main entrance to the University of California campus here.
The Nazis wanted to gather right-wing extremists, including motorcycle clubs from throughout California at a campus demonstration on Saturday, to coincide with a “black power” rally of the Students for a Democratic Society, a campus action group. Berkeley Police Chief William Beall said the Nazi permit was denied because of police manpower problems and the possibility that the conflicting assemblies would lead to violence and bloodshed.
(In Dallas, Texas, last night, police broke up a Nazi demonstration attempting to heckle Arthur J. Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as he was to arrive to deliver a lecture at Southern Methodist University. The police swooped down on the Nazis, several of them in swastika-decorated, storm-troop uniforms, when they started a fight. Four men were arrested, three believed to be Nazis.)
