Police reported today the arrest of a sixth Israeli suspect in a bizarre plot — involving two Americans who were arrested in the United States — to destroy a bridge in Zambia in an effort to affect world prices for copper, a principal Zambian export.
Police refused to disclose the name of the newest suspect but it was learned he was a 42-year-old Iraqi-born former member of a pre-state Jewish underground group. Israeli officials said yesterday that Israeli security services tipped off United States and Zambian authorities about the plot. United States officials then arrested Jay Aubrey Elliott, a traveling representative of the Friedrich Zoellner Corporation, a metals firm associated with a West German concern, and Rolf Duenbier, a vice-president of the corporation. They were arraigned in New York City on Monday and held in high bail.
It was reported here today that Israel sent a special emissary to Zambia to report about the plot. The emissary was received by President Kenneth Kaunda, who expressed his thanks to Israel for its action.
