Woolf Senior, veteran South African Zionist and philanthropist, who played a leading part in the Zionist movement, died here at the age of 85.
Born in Neustadt, Russia, he settled here in 1896 while still in his teens, became active in Zionist work, first in Lurban and subsequently in Johannesburg, where he became a member of the executive council and of the S.A. Zionist Federation. Prospering in business, he made many large-scale benefactions to Zionist projects in Palestine in the pre-State days. He made possible the acquisition of a Zionist Hall in Johannesburg, and a Hachshara training farm in the Transvaal, by substantial personal donations. He gave 50,000 pounds to establish the Woolf Senior Sports Center at the Technion campus in Haifa, and on his 80th birthday gave the Mayor of Johannesburg a check for 10,000 pounds to distribute among the city’s poor.
