Greetings and special diplomas from two American institutions of higher learning — Yeshiva University and Rutgers State University — were presented here today to Shmuel Yosef Agnon, co-winner of the 1966 Nobel Prize for literature.
Mr. Agnon was the guest of honor today at a reception given for him by Israeli Ambassador Yaacov Shimoni. During the reception, the greetings and diplomas were given to him by Dr. Eleazar Hurvitz, of New York, professor of rabbinic’s at Yeshiva University.
The Rutgers University in a message to Mr. Agnon said: “Our department of Hebrew studies is among the first institutions of higher learning in the United States to introduce study of your works, thus enriching many students. We join in recognizing your eminence in the world of letters as a Hebrew writer.”
(West Germany’s President Heinrich Luebke cabled congratulations today to Miss Nelly Sachs, the German-born author who has been the co-winner of the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature. In his message, President Luebke told Miss Sachs, who left Germany in 1940 as a Jewish refugee from Nazi persecution: “We are filled with shame and sadness for the sufferings inflicted upon you and your people especially in this country.”)
