The Israel Government and the Jewish Agency are planning a joint immigration and absorption authority in an effort to provide a central office for immigrants abroad and in Israel, it was disclosed here today. The task of submitting proposals for the planned agency was given to Aryeh L. Pincus, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, and Israeli Labor Minister Yigal Allon.
Mr. Allon said that reduced immigration had forced the Government to take retrenchment measures. He said that if economic activity had continued as before, but with lesser immigration, inflation and a severe economic crisis would have resulted. He added that the current retrenchment did not affect Israeli industries working for export or for replacing imported products.
The Labor Minister declared that large-scale immigration could do much to case Israel’s problems because immigration sparked new economic activity. He added that professionals, middle class Jews, scientists, pioneers and investors could help Israel considerably by settling here.
The establishment of a world Jewish framework in which the Zionist movement would be an influential force was proposed today by Yitzhak Korn, secretary-general of the world Mapai movement, the Ichud Olami.
