A law for the prevention and punishment of crimes of genocide was passed by the Italian Parliament today by a vote of 446 to 10. An amendment offered by the Communist Party that would have increased the proposed penalties, and a Socialist Party amendment that would have disallowed application of any statute of limitations to genocidal crimes, were defeated.
The new law, in its present form, is compatible with the United Nations Genocide Convention, which was signed and ratified by Italy. Rapid approval of the new measure is expected by the Italian Senate.
