A West German movie industry spokesman said today that “The Quiller Memorandum,” a motion picture involving European espionage, had been changed for West German audiences to delete all references to villains as being members of a neo-Nazi terror group.
Ernest Kruger, director of the German movie industry’s self, said the group had requested the changes because “we considered that the presentation of a radical right secret terrorist group in present-day Berlin was unrealistic.” He added that such a presentation also was “inopportune” because of West Germany’s “image toward East Germany and the Communists, who are raising charges of neo-Nazism against us at the moment. “
Observers of the revised version said the cuts seemed to leave most viewers with the impression that the terrorist group is Communist.
