Answering the appeal from Latin American Jewish communities for rabbis, the Rabbinical Assembly has assigned five members of this year’s graduating class of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America to serve there, it was announced today by Rabbi Eli A. Bohnen, president of the Assembly.
One of them, Isidoro Aizenberg, a native of Buenos Aires, will be the first native-born Latin American to enter the rabbinate. He has been assigned to Caracas, Venezuela. The others will serve in Argentina, Brazil and Peru. Latin American Jewry is suffering from a severe shortage of rabbis and religious teachers. Formerly dependent for both on Eastern Europe, the communities were cut off from this wellspring of Jewish learning by the Hitler holocaust. With no native rabbis or seminaries, the communities are feeling the shortage.
