Harold Sanders, White House adviser on Middle East Affairs, and Townsend Hoopes, United States deputy assistant Defense Secretary, met today with Prime Minister Levi Eshkol for what was reported to be an extensive discussion on relations between the United States and Israel and the overall Middle East regional situation.
The two United States officials, currently in Israel on a study mission, conferred yesterday with Gen. Yitzhak Rabin, Army Chief of Staff in a review of Israel’s defense problems. They also met with Deputy Defense Minister Zvi Dinstein. United States Ambassador Walworth Barbour, and Lucius Battle, United States Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, attended the meetings. The presence of the three United States officials were described as “coincidental.”
