Dr. Joseph Luns, the Dutch Foreign Minister, told the Parliament today that the Netherlands Government had demanded that Brazil extra- dite to Austria Franz Stangl, commandant at the Nazi death camps at Sobibor and Treblinka where 80, 000 Dutch Jews were murdered.

Stangl was arrested in Sao Paulo on March 2 and has since been held under maximum security detention in Brasilia, awaiting action on Austrian proceedings for his extradition to face a war crimes trial in Austria. West Germany, which has no extradition treaty with Brazil, also has asked for Stangl’s extradition. Under Brazilian law, the Brazilian Supreme Court must consider an extradition request within 60 days or by May 1.
