Dr. Immanuel Jakobovits, new chief rabbi of the British Commonwealth, pledged here today to do all in his power to help “alleviate the religious attrition and communal isolation of our Russian brethren, ” terming that issue “the most painful Jewish problem of our day.”
He made that statement at ceremonies installing him into his new office, held at St. John’s Wood Synagogue. Other high priority aims identified by the chief rabbi in his installation address included:
1. More intense efforts for study of the Torah, stating that “expenditure in money and energy on Jewish education represents our defense budget”; 2. preservation of the Jewish community’s “predominantly traditional” character; 3. recognition of dissent; and 4. use of his high office to help promote world peace and “the moral regeneration of society.”
