A total of 5,500 pupils are now attending Jewish Day Schools in South Africa, it was reported here at the 14th National Jewish Education Conference, attended by delegates from all parts of the country. Of these, 4,200 attend day schools supervised by the South African Board of Jewish Education, and 1,300 attend schools supervised by the Cape Board of Jewish Education. Additionally, more than 5,000 children attend Jewish nursery schools and afternoon schools supervised by the Board of Jewish Education.

The report stressed that Jewish history and religion form an integral part of the day school syllabus, and morning and afternoon prayers take place daily. Since the Board’s previous conference three years ago, 27 students have Graduated from its Rabbi J.L. Zlotnik Teachers Training College. Twenty-one have already taken teaching posts, while some are continuing with further studies. The Board’s hostel in Johannesburg now houses 100 pupils from country centers. The hostel provides a full Jewish background, with daily prayer services, sabbath and festival services, and complete kashrut.
