Murray Gurfein, former president of United Hias Service, was honored here tonight for his extraordinary record of service as a leader for close to ten years of the organization’s rescue and migration activities. The occasion was the agency’s annual dinner on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, at which a total of $750,000 was pledged and contributed by more than 200 guests.
Mr. Gurfein received a silver bowl, presented by State Attorney General Louis J. Lefkowitz, as a token of appreciation from UJA and United Hias of his achievements and example. Chairman Carlos Israels, president of United Hias Service, who presided at the dinner, thanked the guests for their generous support and praised them for their realization of the importance of UJA’s efforts.
Edwin Rosenberg, honorary dinner chairman, read a number of telegrams and letters of congratulations which were received from friends of Mr. Gurfein. Among the notables who sent felicitations were Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Senator Jacob J. Javits, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, Israel Ambassador Avraham Harman, Mayor John V. Lindsay, James Wine, special assistant to Secretary of State in charge of refugee and migration affairs, and Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
