A capacity crowd of 20,000 at Madison Square Garden here paid the admission price of $10 to $100 — with boxes ranging from $1,500 to $2,000 — tonight to hear Israel’s former Foreign Minister Golda Meir eloquently call for new initiatives to further peace in the Middle East. Senators Jacob K. Javits and Robert F. Kennedy of New York issued strong pleas for American efforts to guarantee against further hostilities in the area.
The rally, titled “Stars for Israel,” benefited the Israel Emergency Fund of the United Jewish Appeal and featured many of the nation’s leading performers of stage, screen, television and the concert hall.
Senator Javits said he will explore with his senatorial colleagues early next week a guide for the U.S. Government to formulate a policy “for permanent peace in the Middle East based on the realities of the situation in that part of the world.” Senator Kennedy advocated a program of development for the entire Middle East. He called for a peace settlement that would recognize Israel as a country, her borders, and her right to survive and prosper.
