Unity of Jewish and Arab workers through joint membership in Histadrut, Israel’s labor federation, would protect the interests of both groups, a two-man delegation representing British labor indicated to newsmen on their return here from a visit to Israel.
Frank Cousins, general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union, and Fred Heyday, chairman of the Trade Union International Committee, who comprised the delegation, were guests of Histadrut in Israel, They expressed their satisfaction with their visit and emphasized “the complete understanding” which had been evident between the Israeli unionists and themselves on most of the issues they had discussed.
They especially referred to their participation in ceremonies marking the opening of Histadrut House in the Old City of Jerusalem, where they had met and addressed Arab workers and had emphasized to them the importance of their joining Histadrut. They also were impressed by reports on the political situation received during their meetings with Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and Foreign Minister Abba Eban. The two labor leaders will report on their visit tomorrow at a meeting of the Trade Union Committee’s general council.
