President Johnson has declared here that the Middle East, recovering now from “the shock” of the June war between the Arab states and Israel, looks toward Iran as an example that “beckons to all the Middle East.”
Mr. Johnson made that observation last night in a toast at a White House dinner honoring Iran’s Shah Mahommed Riza Pahlevi, who arrived here for two days of consultations, in which the peace and security of the Middle East play a major role. Referring to the June war, the President told the Shah: “That shock should not and must not obscure the vision of what they can do to solve their problems constructively, peacefully–working with their neighbors.”
President Johnson has written to King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, to assure the Arabs that Israel will withdraw from occupied territories if the Arabs make certain arrangements.” according to a report from Washington to the newspaper Al Hayat, of Beirut, Lebanon. The dispatch hinted that withdrawal was connected with the five points stated by President Johnson on June 19. These called for Arab recognition of Israeli statehood, justice for the Arab refugees, rights of all shipping in international waterways, limits on the arms race, and political independence for all.
