Jordanian troops and an Israeli patrol exchanged fire this morning at a point about 12 miles north of the Damiyah Bridge across the Jordan River, after the Jordanians started shooting at the patrol as it moved along the west bank of the river. There were no Israeli casualties.
According to the Israel Army spokesman, here, the Jordanians opened the fire from the east bank of the river, and the Israelis returned the fire. The spokesman noted that this was the first shooting incident on the Jordanian border in several days. The Damiyah Bridge is one of the two spans — the other being the Allenby Bridge, still further south — where the Arab refugees wishing to return to the Israeli-held west bank of the Jordan continued today to stream into the west bank area.
