Jordanian artillery opened fire last night and again this morning on Israeli units across the Jordan River demarcation line but was silenced by Israeli guns, a military spokesman reported today. There were no Israeli casualties.
The incident occurred after an Israeli patrol intercepted a band of Arab marauders north of the El Mandassa Bridge in the Beisan Valley, killing one and wounding another. The latter is presumed to have drowned while trying to escape across the river. Jordanian guns opened up to cover the gang’s retreat. The Jordanians began firing again at 11:00 a.m. local time today south of the Umm Shurt Bridge. The barrage lasted until shortly past noon.
