Israel is expecting 25,000 to 30,000 new immigrants from various countries this year, according to Louis A. Pincus, chairman of the Jewish Agency, in a report he gave today at the 30th annual conference of the council of organizations of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York. Mr. Pincus said that the new arrivals will include many large families and many who have been stripped of all their possessions. They will Join nearly a half million other immigrants in Israel already dependent on Jewish Agency programs of resettlement and rehabilitation. He stressed that the people of Israel, whose resources are “strained to the utmost” to meet security needs and overcome economic difficulties, “are in no position to share the burden of humanitarian aid to their country’s immigrants.”
Albert Parker, president of the UJA of Greater New York, announced that in 30 UJA campaigns, member organizations of the council have raised nearly $50 million. The conference, attended by 3,000 delegates from Jewish fraternal and benevolent societies, marked the 20th anniversary of Israel’s independence, Among the speakers were Michael Arnon, Israel Consul General in New York and Ossip Walinsky, chairman of the council’s committee for the construction of the House of World Jewish Communities in Tel Aviv.
