The Polish consul here invalidated the visas of 36 Jews who had been scheduled to attend the dedication of the Jewish pavilion in Auschwitz, it was revealed today. The consul said only that he was following orders. No foreign Jewish communities were represented at the ceremonies.
The decision came some weeks after the charge d’affaires of the Polish embassy here announced that a delegation of 36 Jews belonging to the “Anti-Nazi Fighters Society” would participate in the Auschwitz ceremony. Jewish community officials here said that no such organization exists in Brazil. Observers said that the Polish diplomat made the announcement to counter reports from Jewish organizations in the western world that Jews were not being invited to the pavilion ceremony.
The 36 Jews who had prepared to depart for Poland and whose visas were revoked at the last moment applied individually for the travel document. All were known to be leftists.
