The Indian Government has issued a postage stamp and first day cover marking the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Cochin synagogue in the Indian state of Kerala. The Jewish community of Cochin, which dates its origin 2,000 years ago, has largely emigrated to Israel. Only several hundred Jews remain. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported last month that the community leaders asked the Indian Government for permission to move the Torah scrolls and ritual items from the old synagogue to Israel so that the Cochin Jews can remain a cohesive community in their new home.
