West Germany’s Ambassador-designate to Israel expressed surprise today that he was selected for the post but said he was “very keen to go to Israel” as a result of many meetings with Israeli colleagues. Karl Herman Knoke, who is presently Bonn’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, added, in an interview with German newspapers, that “one should not forget what crimes the Germans committed against the Jewish people and this is a burden which is upon us.”
