The emissary sent by Mr. Thant to Algeria last week, possibly to seek the release of the hijacked airliner and Israelis, has returned here. But Mr. Thant had no comment on the mission Wednesday.
The emissary, Mr. Rolz-Bennett, returned yesterday, a UN spokesman revealed. He had gone to Algeria with a written communication for President Houari Boumedienne. The UN declined to say whether he had returned with a Boumedienne message for Mr. Thant. Meanwhile, the Algerian Ambassador to the UN, Tewfik Bouattoura, conferred today with Mr. Thant at the Secretary-General’s request. It was assumed that the two dealt with the issue of the Boeing 707, hijacked by Arab terrorists on a Rome to Tel Aviv flight.
