Canadian Jewish Congress Supports Striking San Joaquin Grape Workers

The Canadian Jewish Congress today announced its support of the San Joaquin Valley (California) table grape field workers who are striking for better wages and working conditions. A statement issued by Sydney M. Harris, chairman of the CJ Congress’ central region, called on consumers, wholesalers and retailers of California table grapes to recognize the issues involved and “act according to the dictates of their consciences.” The statement deplored repressive measure being taken against the strikers and noted that “the true meaning of our Jewish tradition rests on the efforts we put forth to secure justice and righteousness as a foundation stone of our civilization.” The statement was issued on the occasion of a “silent march” here in which representatives of various faiths joined to protest the conditions of California grape workers.
