Secretary-General U Thant said yesterday that he shared the concern of his chief truce supervisor in the Middle East over the possibility of new large scale warfare erupting across the Suez Canal. Mr. Thant’s warning that almost daily firing across the canal could lead to a “still more serious breach of the cease-fire” by Israeli and Egyptian forces was contained in a note appended to the report of Lt. Gen. Odd Bull, of Norway, head of the UN truce supervision team, on cease-fire violations. Gen. Bull reported that most rifle, automatic and machinegun fire was initiated by the Egyptians.

(Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring will meet with Egyptian officials tomorrow, a UN spokesman said. He did not indicate when the Mideast peace envoy would visit Amman and Jerusalem.)
