The chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive predicted today that 7,000 American Jews will settle in Israel this year compared to 4,500 in 1968. Louis A. Pincus told a press conference that immigration from the major Western countries was expected to rise sharply this year. He said immigrants from South Africa would probably number 1,000 as against 450 last year despite the economic upsurge in South Africa. From Britain, he said, 2,000 immigrants were expected as against 1,400 last year.

These figures, he said, were based on the latest estimates and a projection of actual immigration during the first four months of the year. The total estimate for 1969, he said, remained at between 35,000 and 40,000.
