Australian Prime Minister John Gorton and 11 other leading Australians have signed a joint appeal to the United Nations requesting help to alleviate the plight of Jews in Arab countries. Other signatories included former Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies, Cardinal Sir Norman Gilroy and Nobel laureate for medicine Sir MacFarlane Burnet.
The appeal speaks of the “conscience of humanity” and asks the UN to take every possible step to alleviate the plight of the Jews and to urge Arab governments concerned, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to stop oppressive activities and to permit Jews to emigrate to those countries which have declared their readiness to accept them.
