Gen. Uzi Narkiss, who commanded the Israeli central front in the Six-Day War, told newspapermen here that the fighting on the Suez Canal would not erupt into a full-scale war because Israel wanted to maintain the peace and because President Nasser of Egypt was in no position to wage war.

Gen. Narkiss, who is head of the Jewish Agency Immigration Department, arrived here on a mission to promote emigration to Israel. He told the press that Nasser was trying to keep the canal situation hot as a means of pressure on the United Nations and the Four Powers to compel Israel to accede to Arab demands.
