Israeli authorities are holding the town clerk of Nablus on charges of participation in hostile activities against Israel, it was disclosed today. The clerk, Yehyeh Aouda, was recently arrested with several other suspects. A document found in his possession contained plans for a guerrilla attack on an Israeli Army camp in the Samaria district. It was addressed to a guerrilla leader in Amman. Israeli officials said that the plans called for an attack on June 27, the day an attempted attack was made on the camp.
Some 200 local Arab notables, including Hebron Mayor Sheikh Mouhammed Ala Jaabari, joined in a meeting in Jerusalem at which they declared they were strongly opposed to Arab terrorist activities and added that they strongly dissociated themselves from such actions. The notables included sheikhs and chiefs of tribes in the West Bank – Hebron area.
They approved a memorandum which was sent to Defense Minister Moshe Dayan which said that the participants were calling on all Arab citizens to refuse all help to the terrorists and they also called on Arab countries to refuse help to the terrorists. The notables charged that the terrorists were undermining life and commerce of the Arabs themselves.
