The Rev. John L. Regier, associate general secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., today called upon the United Nations to investigate immediately “the executions that have taken place with uncivilized brutality” in Iraq. Speaking at a public memorial service for the 15 people executed last week in Iraq–11 Moslems, two Christians and two Jews— held here at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza near the UN, Rev. Regier added:
“The citizen of no country today can justifiably point an accusing finger at another country on issues of human rights and fundamental freedoms. But men of humanity everywhere can–indeed must–rise in full-throated protest when brutality overcomes decency, arbitrariness takes the place of law, and when force in the hands of those who govern denies freedom to the people under their power.”
More than 500 persons stood in the rain to participate in the service which was organized by the Synagogue Council of America on behalf of 24 major Jewish organizations.
