The charter of a million dollar foundation originally established to award scholarships to orphaned students seeking a college education in the City University system or New York University, has been broadened to permit grants to any student unable to attend yeshivas because of high tuition fees.
According to Rabbi David B. Hollander, president of the Charles and Anna Ellenberg Foundation, the foundation will distribute roughly $50,000-$100,000 annually. Preference will still be given to orphans, he said, but any needy applicant will be considered.
Rabbi Bernard Weinberger, a member of the foundation’s board, said the original scope of the charter was restrictive and an insufficient number of applicants received grants. The board felt that it was not coping with the crucial issue of Jewish education. A petition to broaden the charter was granted last month by the New York State Supreme Court.
