Miss Angie Brooks, newly-elected president of the 24th United Nations General Assembly, said today that she favored a solution of the Middle East problem by the parties directly concerned. She pledged to work “behind the scenes” to help reconcile Arab-Israeli differences as well as for solutions of other world problems.
Miss Brooks declined to comment on a question about Israel’s refusal to admit to the occupied territories a special committee set up by the General Assembly to study the condition of the Arabs there. She said that to answer the question would be to violate her required impartiality as president of the General Assembly. Miss Brooks is Assistant Secretary of State of Liberia.
Mohamed H. el-Zayyat, Egypt’s new permanent representative to the UN. presented his credentials yesterday to Secretary-General U Thant. He had been his Government’s official spokesman until his appointment here. From 1962-64, Mr. el-Zayyat was Egypt’s deputy permanent UN representative.
