Jordanian farmers are resorting to old diesel-powered pumps to irrigate their crops in place of the Ghor irrigation canal that was damaged by an Israeli air attack’ last month. The pumps draw water from the Yarmuk and Jordan rivers but only enough to irrigate a fraction of the area formerly watered by the Ghor canal.

Jordanian authorities have made no effort to repair the canal which has been damaged twice by Israeli attacks. Following the first attack, Israel agreed not to interfere with repair work after Jordan promised to restrain guerrillas and its regular forces from shelling Israeli settlements on the opposite bank.
