The Association of Georgian Immigrants in Israel cabled the chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Georgian Republic yesterday urging him to reply to the applications of 18 Jewish families who want exit permits in order to join their relatives in Israel.
The appeal of the Jewish families was brought to the United Nations Monday by the Israeli Ambassador Yosef Tekoah, It was contained in two documents, one of them a letter addressed to Mr. Tekoah in his capacity as Israel’s chief representative before the world organization and the other addressed to the UN Human Rights Commission. Mr. Tekoah asked Secretary General U Thant to use his”good offices” on behalf of the petitioners and was told that Mr. Thant would do what he could. The letters were signed by the heads of the families and contained their home addresses. Thirteen of the signatories were from the town of Kutaisi and the rest from Poti and Tiflis. Israel’s Premier, Mrs. Golda Meir, spoke of the appeal in a television broadcast Monday night.
