Israel Air Force jets bombed military targets in the northern and southern sectors of the Suez Canal zone for ten minutes today and returned safely to their bases. Four Israeli settlements in the Beisan Valley were attacked with rocket fire during the night by Arab guerrillas operating from Jordanian territory. Pvt. Rafael Mayara, 20, of Yokneam was killed and two other Israeli soldiers were injured shortly after midnight when their vehicle struck a mine near Nahal Dikla in the northern Sinai. A military spokesman said guerrillas with mobile Katyusha rocket launchers mounted a series of hit-and-run attacks on Neve Eitan, Tirat Zvi and Ashdod Yaacov in the Beisan area. Settlers went to bomb shelters. The only casualties reported were two women in Neve Eitan who suffered slight electric shocks when they touched live wires knocked down by a shell. Israeli Army positions in the Jordan Valley south of Beisan were attacked during the night with bazookas and small arms. The fire was returned. There were no Israeli casualties. El Fatah claimed in Beirut that a series of attacks on settlements in Upper Galilee last Friday represented the opening of a “new front inside Israel” by Palestinian guerrillas.
