The water-pumping station at Ashdod Yaacov was idled last night because of a sharp drop in the water level of the Yarmouk River. An Israeli spokesman said the Jordanians have drawn an excessive amount of water from the river to supply their Ghor irrigation canal, which has finally been repaired. The canal was blasted by Israeli jets several months ago in retaliation for attacks on Israeli settlements from Jordan. Israel permitted the repairs to be made at the behest of the United States, which financed construction of the 50-mile water conduit, Jordan’s largest irrigation project. The Jordanian government promised at the time to end attacks on Israeli border settlements, but the promise has never been kept.
