A drive to raise funds for a $1 million Edgar F. Magnin School of Graduate Studies, in honor of the 80th birthday yesterday of the longtime spiritual leader of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, has been sparked by a $100,000 initial gift from the daughter of Rabbi Magnin’s predecessor. The donor is Mrs. J.Y. Baruh, whose father, the late Rabbi Sigmund Hecht. turned the leadership of the world’s largest Reform temple over to Rabbi Magnin 55 years ago. The temple currently has 2,500 member families. The Magnin school will be part of Hebrew Union College’s new $6 million facilities, being built adjacent to the campus of the University of Southern California here.
