The Labor Party and its allies emerged victorious in the Nazareth City Council elections yesterday but the Communists retained their position as the strongest single party in that Christian Arab town. The Labor alignment won seven seats in the 17-member Council and can count on the support of Mapam and the Arab Religious Party which won three seats between them. The Communists, who polled 40 percent of the vote, hold the remaining seven seats. Despite heavy rains, 85 percent of the 16,000 eligible voters turned up at the polls. A dispute has already arisen among the non-Communist factions. The Religious Party leader is demanding the Mayor’s office for himself as the price of supporting the Labor Party. But Labor has its own candidate, Saif Addin Zouabi, a Labor member of the Knesset.
