For the first time in the annals of Israeli trade union history five East Jerusalem Arabs are running as candidates for the National Congress of the Metalworkers Trade Union, a division of Histadrut. In the general elections for the Histadrut Convention which took place last year, a number of East Jerusalem Arabs had announced their candidacy, but withdrew from the elections after receiving several threatening letters. The Metalworkers Trade Union released the names of the present candidates only today in order to avoid repetition of such threats.
