The Government decided yesterday to withhold approval for commercial advertising on television for the time being. The Government acted in accordance with a recommendation by the plenary council of the Israel Broadcasting Authority. The Authority has the power to authorize tv commercials but decided not to exercise it in view of the far-reaching affects such a move was likely to have on the national economy. The principal objection to commercial tv stems from the fear that it would stimulate private consumption at a time when the Government is battling inflation. The Israel Newspaper Publishers Association has voiced opposition because tv advertising would divert revenues from newspapers.
