Hadassah has presented Dr. Kalman J. Mann, the director general of the Hadassah Medical Organization, with a check for $500,000 as the initial installment of what shall be the Kalman J. Mann Research Fund. In presenting the check to Dr. Mann at the recent 10th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center at Ein Karem, Jerusalem, Mrs. Edward H. Lewish, HMO fundraising chairman, said: “This check is part-payment toward a million-dollar research fund which we are establishing as a tribute to our wonderful staff. This money is over and above Hadassah’s regular HMO quotas for healing, teaching and research.” Mrs. Charlotte Jacobson, HMO chairman, pointed out the importance of unassigned research money that would be readily available as new medical information emerged and required immediate follow-up. Referring to the work of Hadassah’s Dr. Cloe Tal who has developed a new test for cancer detection, Mrs. Jacobson said: “Dr. Tal’s work shows what can be done with modest grants if researchers have the proper scientific surroundings.”
