A German witness has declared in a sworn affidavit that she had seen Martin Bormann, Hitler’s former deputy, in Russian hands soon after the Soviet occupation of Berlin. The witness, the daughter of a former Wehrmacht general, declared that she had seen Bormann brought in at the Soviet-Berlin headquarters while she herself was being interrogated by Soviet officers. Bormann had apparently been captured by the Russians somewhere between the Lehrter and the Bellevue stations of the Berlin subway.
The witness’ declarations are published in today’s German newspaper Die Welt. The witness, whose name was not released, said she had been prompted to make this revelation because of General Reinhardt Gehlen’s recent disclosures. Gehlen, a former Nazi general who reportedly defected to U.S. Intelligence near the end of the war, related in his memoirs that Bormann was a Soviet agent. The witness added that soon after the end of the war, while she was being interrogated by the American Secret Service, she told them the same story.
