Rabbi Israel Miller, president of the American Zionist Federation, today expressed “gratification” with the decision of the World Zionist Congress tribunal upholding the position of the AZF to hold a postal ballot for the election of delegates to the Congress scheduled for Jerusalem next January. Rabbi Miller said that as planned, the mail ballots will be sent out during the week of Dec. 5 by the American Arbitration Association, the impartial group that will conduct the election. Ballots must be returned to New York for counting before Dec. 24, he said.
Rabbi Miller urged that all American Zionist groups accept the decision of the tribunal “in good spirit” and he expressed the hope that “the American Zionist movement will be strengthened as a result of the holding of a democratic election.” Fifty-five percent of the American delegation’s 152 seats will be chosen by the mail ballots. The remaining 45 percent of the delegate seats will be allocated on the basis of the membership strengths of the various AZF affiliate organizations.
