An Israeli exhibition currently being held here in connection with Israel Week, was the scene of a peaceful confrontation between Arabs and Jews last night. The Arabs, about 200 of them, were members of the Lebanese Students Association which was holding its annual meeting on an upper floor of the building in which the Israeli exhibition is located.
Curiosity prompted some of them to look in on the exhibit, browse among the books and pamphlets and examine the pictures on display. When the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent arrived at the exhibit, there were at least 200 Arab students including Egyptians, Syrians, Palestinians and Algerians in the hall, apparently more than were attending their own meeting upstairs.
They were gathered in about a half dozen groups discussing with Israelis and other Jews the benefits and mutual interaction of Zionism and Arab nationalism. Most of the Arab students said they favored “peaceful understanding between the two nations” on condition that Israel withdraws from the occupied territories and that a “just” solution is found for the Palestinian problem. Many of the young Arabs displayed knowledge of Zionist history. Some quoted Zionist writers, such as Ber Borochov, to support their own views.
