A non-Jewish alderman who helped Yaacov Gluzman emigrate from the Soviet Union to be reunited in Israel with his wife, Rita, and their baby was awarded a commemorative Israeli “Let My People Go” coin here by Moshe Gilboa, Israeli Consul General for the Southeast. Gilboa said Alderman Wyche Fowler’s “humanitarian act on behalf of the Jewish family is a shining example for human brotherhood, courage, and dedication to promote basic human rights including one’s right of emigration to one’s homeland.”

On a State Department-sponsored visit to the Soviet Union last November, Fowler raised the question of Gluzman’s emigration with Soviet officials, having read a story about Mrs. Gluzman in an Atlanta newspaper. Within two days, Gluzman’s exit visa was approved.
