Mrs. Eva But-man, wife of Hillel Butman who was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in 1970, was arrested, searched, interrogated and severely beaten by the KGB after she had visited Butman in the Potma labor camp on Monday it was reported today by Jewish sources. According to the sources, Mrs. Butman was told by a KGB officer that “It is useless to oppose us,” Mrs. Butman was reported to be writing to the minister of the interior to protest the interrogation and the assault. She sustained lacerations and bruises on her face and body and is recuperating at home.
In other developments, Jewish sources reported that Vladimir Slepak’s medical examination was concluded Tuesday and he was declared “not physically fit” to do manual labor. Slepak, an electrical engineer and activist, was ordered to take a Job hauling gravel in a concrete plant or face a charge of parasitism which carries a sentence of up to one year imprisonment upon conviction. Slepak, who had been fired from his engineering job after applying for a visa to emigrate to Israel, suffers from a chronic vascular condition in his legs.
Jewish sources also reported that Lena Ulmanskya, 27, a teacher of Russian literature who was arrested at the Kiev synagogue Feb. 19 and sentenced to 15 days in prison, was called to the Kiev militia head quarters on Monday and warned that she “will be arrested if you go to the synagogue again. You will be sentenced to one year.
