Defense Minister Moshe Dayan said today that West Bank residents may no longer need special permits to visit Jordan. He said a proposal to eliminate the permits was under study but noted that even if the permits are abolished, West Bankers crossing into Jordan would have to show a special Israeli identity card or Jordanian passport.
Gen. Dayan disclosed that about 30,000 of the 200,000 West Bankers who fled to Jordan during the 1967 Six-Day War have been permitted to return to rejoin their families. He said there were many more who wished to return but that problem could only be solved when broader arrangements are made. He did not indicate what arrangements he had in mind.
