Sister Ann Elizabeth Gillen, who was last week appointed to the newly created position of executive director of the National Interreligious Task Force on Soviet Jewry, will be one of the leaders in the Chicago Women’s Plea for Human Rights for Soviet Jewish Prisoners of Conscience rally Dec. 12. The rally here, sponsored by major Jewish women’s organizations in the area and convened by Women’s American ORT under the auspices of the Leadership Conference of National Jewish Women’s Organizations, will coincide with similar rallies in 47 cities throughout the country.
Sister Gillen has been active in many cities across the country in promoting greater understanding between Christian and Jewish communities. In Houston, Texas, she served as program associate with the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and helped establish the Christian Concern About Israel and the Christian Concern About Soviet Jewry groups. She spent a summer in Israel where she studied international affairs. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Dropsie University studying under Dr. Solomon Grayzel and Dr. Theodore Gaster.
As executive director of the Interreligious Task Force, Sister Gillen will be working with leaders of Christian communities to mobilize American religious opinion on behalf of human rights in the Soviet Union. She took her first vows in 1943.
